Ten Commandments of The First Baptist Church of America

A new set of Commandments for the modern age.

The First Baptist Church of America offers these Ten Commandments as a modern covenant for a fractured time. When the social contract breaks down, people need more than outrage and exhaustion; they need a framework for moving forward. These Commandments name the ideals our members vow to pursue: dignity, peace, justice, education, autonomy, solidarity, creativity, gratitude, and care for the world God has given us. Anyone could have written Commandments, perhaps, but The First Baptist Church of America chose to name them, preserve them, and ask its members to live by them.

1

Thou shalt treat all people with dignity and respect, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, religion, or social status.

2

Thou shalt honor and protect the planet Earth, our Mother

3

Thou shalt reject greed and excess, and strive for equality and justice.

4

Thou shalt not engage in violence or aggression towards others, but seek peaceful solutions to conflict.

5

Thou shalt prioritize education and intellectual growth, seeking knowledge and wisdom throughout your life.

6

Thou shalt respect the autonomy and agency of others, recognizing their right to make their own choices and decisions.

7

Thou shalt reject hatred and prejudice, and seek to build bridges of understanding and solidarity between different communities.

8

Thou shalt value and support the arts and creativity, recognizing their power to inspire and uplift the human spirit.

9

Thou shalt embrace diversity and difference, recognizing the unique gifts and talents of every individual.

10

Thou shalt cultivate a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness, recognizing the many blessings of life and the world around us.

As Members of the First Baptist Church of America, we vow to hold these commandments as ideals, and strive to always fulfill them to the best of our abilities. Amen.

Each framed copy is intentionally pre-wrinkled by hand, making every piece unique. The texture is part of the design, not a defect: a reminder that commandments are not meant to live untouched in a sterile world, but to be carried into real life, where faith is practiced, tested, remembered, and renewed. No two framed copies are exactly alike, giving each one its own character as a physical reminder of the ideals held by members of The First Baptist Church of America.
